Obituary

Tiiu Sild "Tehnoannas pagrabi" year 2007.

We were truly sorry to hear of the loss of Tiiu Sild,
the Director of Science Centre AHHAA, who passed away in 16 February 2012.

This is a true loss not only for Tiiu family, science centre AHHAA, but also for all Estonia.
There are not so many people in our world like Tiiu Sild who devoted herself working with an idea during all her lifetime and whose cherished life work became a reality – a new science centre in Baltic States.
Tiiu Sild was born on 17 July 1958, graduated from high school and the
university with honours and became a specialist in molecular biology and
molecular diagnostics, later to be known as the most acknowledged science
popularizer in Estonia. Tiiu Sild became the head of Science Centre AHHAA
at its founding in 1997, steadily enhancing the centre’s reputation
and introducing the Estonian scene of science and research on the global
scale, receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award for Science Popularization
for her efforts from the Estonian Ministry of Education and Research in
2011.
In addition to a successful career in science and active participation in
numerous global science associations, Tiiu Sild was also the mother of
four children, all of whom are now occupied in the field of science as
well.

As colleagues in the world of science centres we hope that Tiiu’s Sild investment in education system of Estonia will be continued and developed - in good memory of her.
We express our condolences at this difficult time to Tiiu family, friends and colleagues at science centre AHHAA.

Alvis Balodis,
director of Children’s Science Centre TEHNOANNAS PAGRABI, Riga, LATVIA

AHHAA gave a visit to its Latvian colleagues in Riga at Tehnoannas Pagrabi
The purpose of the trip was to find out more about Lativian only science center called "Tehnoannas Pagrabi". It is said to be a children's center, but it has a strong effect on adults also.

Staff of AHHAA enjoyed "Tehnoanna Pagrabi's" exhibits on two floors, especially exciting was the blind tunnel in the basement of the two floored building. Visiting a house what you can set up the way you like, made AHHAA miss even more its own science center building.

Staff of Tehnoannas Parabi shared its experience on how to run a science centre and welcomed AHHAA in a really polite way. They were very friendly and open as a family of a science center should be. We are wishing them all the best!

Please find out more about a small, but really exciting science center in Riga from the following page: http://www.pagrabi.lv/index.html
